An App to Close Your Nutritional Gap

I wanted to let you know about a new app I have been using to monitor my nutrition. The Mixfit app is not just another food tracker, it’s an EASY way to be health conscious about what you are REALLY putting into your body… tracking each food, not just for your calories (like the other apps) but for your actual NUTRIENTS … what really counts!

Mixfit is a Boston-based company focused on personalizing our approach to nutrition through science, technology and design. Working with nutritionists and data scientists, engineers and designers, they have created the first, at-home nutrient delivery system that analyzes your health data in real-time to determine your individual nutritional gaps and help you take steps to close them. The company does this through MINA (Mixfit Intelligent Nutrition Assistant,) the Artificial Intelligence platform that analyzes the daily meals, physical activity, and lifestyle factors you log into their app and then serves up a personalized nutritional drink (with up to 23 vitamins and minerals) meant specifically for you.

This amazing tool is available on Apple or Android, and my experience using it has been truly exciting! As an athlete, I thought I was super on point with the foods I choose to fuel my body, but after trying out Mixfit, I realized I was actually pretty off, even when having a personal nutritionist! This tool is a must! I now share my results with my nutritionist who then helps me adjust my food intake so I can get the vitamins and minerals my body needs. Using the app was an important eye opener that has taught me to be 100% conscious of what I’m bringing into my body - which foods are worth it, and which aren’t!

The best part is that they have created the Eat What You Need Challenge to educate and encourage people to monitor their own nutritional gaps and follow a personalized approach to narrowing them.

You have until October 31 to enter! Here’s how: Download the Mixfit app for Apple or Android, log your meals for one week (7-consecutive days) and share your experience on Instagram, tagging @gomixfit and using the hashtag #eatwhatyouneed.

All contest participants will have the chance to win one of three prizes: First prize: $2,500 CASH, Second prize: Mixfit Starter Pack + 3 months supply (a $600 value), Third prize: Mixfit Starter Pack + 1 month supply (a $450 value).

Don’t miss out on this great chance to educate yourself on being healthier, getting into the habit of tracking your foods and being rewarded for it!

Chicago marathon... My first

My first question to Vanessa was, can you prepare for a Marathon, while training and competing in Triathlon? Her immediate answer was a confident “hell yes”. If you have been into endurance sports for a long time, you may already know this, but as a middle-of-the-pack runner who got selected through a lottery to run his very first Chicago Marathon, this was a legitimate concern.

I first heard about 101 Training from a close friend who got into triathlons, and after training with 101, she suddenly started posting pictures taking the podium at local events and even qualifying for the Ironman 70.3 World Cup. That got my attention. I decided to try my hand at a local Sprint Triathlon race while in the early stages of marathon training. I made every rookie mistake in the book, but surprisingly ended up having the time of my life. I knew right then that it was time to focus on triathlon and take a closer look into what 101 was offering.  I suspected that with the right coach, I could still fulfill my dream of running the Chicago Marathon while becoming a triathlete. Vanessa was absolutely the right coach.

As soon as I joined the 101 Training team, I immediately knew that I was making a great choice. I was expecting members of the team to be close friends, but I could never have imagined how much of a family this team really was. Everyone was extremely welcoming from the very beginning, making sure I felt encouraged and supported to reach my goals. Vanessa was there every step of the way. She designed a training plan that would allow me to tackle many triathlons I had circled on the calendar, while preparing for what she would appropriately call my “A-Race”, The Chicago Marathon. This was exactly what I was looking for but having such a diverse and positively minded group of people there to train with me was the ultimate icing on the cake.

I type this having crossed the finish line in Chicago just 7 days ago, so you could make the argument that I’m still experiencing the fabled “runner’s high”, and you would probably be right. I crossed that line feeling strong, I ran at a much faster pace than I ever thought possible just months before, but most importantly, I had a huge smile on my face. 101 Training was a huge part of this journey.

I am already looking ahead to my next goals (Ironman). 101 gave me the confidence to aim very high while discovering what I am capable off, and I cannot wait to see what the coach has in store to prepare for next year.

IRONMAN 70.3 St George = A team experience

It’s May 2019, we finally go to St. George 70.3!!! bucket list race and 6 team athletes make it! we are very excited to be there and plan our trip a long time ahead! We fly into Las Vegas and drive to St George (no one wants to risk loosing their bike on a connecting flight!) so we fly direct and drive there…

Once we get there the weather is chilly and we hear the news that the venue has just been named the 2021 World Championship venue for 70.3, plus the full IRONMAN will be back for 2020. This is even more exciting! we can’t wait to get on ur bikes and go for a spin!

St George Town is very nice so we walk around, grab some lunch and head for the Registration Tent and hop around the sponsors tents for a while! we are VERY lucky to run into 3 of our Sponsors! Rapid Reboot has a huge tent with a lot of compression boots so we hang around the comfy chairs for a while taking turns on the boots! Also Zealios tent is nearby and we also for a while…and Carbo Rocket provides us with some Aqua electrolytes and other carb drinks, they too have an awesome tent. Not all race venues have equal set ups and I most say this is one of the best ones I have seen in a while.

After a good day of rest, trying our bikes, swimming in the lake and checking out those legs for the run…we head out home for a “nervous” night rest and wake up very intimated by the 54 degrees at 5 am! we head out to the cold, dark lake…as soon as the sun starts rising in horizon we can’t believe the beauty of the completely blue and orange skies and start to forget about the cold.

It’s go time! the swim is cold, most of us wearing head warmers and some with booties, but it’s also a fast swim for most of us! Off to the bike: cold, beautiful, brutal! the beauty that surrounds truly has no comparision with any other IRONMAN event I have attended, more than 20 in the books, but this has to be the most breathtaking of all! The bike ends with a 10 mile descent were you basically go as fast as your bike lets you, this is a great recovery for the legs after more than 40 brutal miles, so we go out to run with a good spirit and legs feeling confident! Again a brutal run is waiting for us, but the view keeps you distracted on every hill and you try to #embracethesuck , this ended up being our phrase of the trip hahahaha, we knew how challenging this race would be so we decided we just had to embrace it from beginning to end!

Crossing that finish line with a perfect weather (not cold anymore), and sharing a beer afterwards celebrating being lucky enough to have done such a challenging race and all wanting to come back for a revenge was a perfect way to close the day!

One more thing to do though… Zion, yes! we spend the next day walking (barely) around Zion amazed by that magical place before heading back home to Miami… we’ll be back!

Two of our athletes conquer IRONMAN Cozumel

A Full IRONMAN is no easy feet, but Maria Michelena and Veronica Vetencourt are READY! As the head to Mexico, I’m super nervios…, yes I’m the coach, but I have never donde an IRONMAN myself! I have studied over and over how to approach an IRONMAN training program, how to establish the training loads and were to peak, etc., but the psychological part or the athlete is so important and so out of control for a coach.

When the going gets tough, we need all the will power and mental strength to overcome this huge challenge, and one of the toughest muscle to train flor many athletes is the mind. If you don’t believe in yourself, it doesn’t matter how much other athletes believe in you!

I trust they both have this to their advantage! so I calm down, wait for their wheather report, the pics of their athlete check in and their feet up in resting position with the most beautiful view possible of pristine water and a huge bottle of water and electrolytes! it’s all going according to plan….

The big day approaches and I’m getting more anxious, wish I was there!!! I wish I could go to ALL of my athletes races and just be there to hug them and stare into their eyes: “you got this, you got this, you have done all the training, it’s in the bag” , but I can’t, I’m far and tracking minute by minute…

They finish the swim, they finish the bike, the finish the run! BOOM! pics of the biggest smile possible, tears of total happiness and pain at the sam time, Vero “ you are an IRONMAN”, Maru “you are an IRONMAN” that is all they can remember for now…. and all they say through the phone is “ coach , wish you were here…”

OUR TEAM EXPERIENCE IN IRONMAN 70.3 SANTA ROSA - CALIFORNIA

So, here we are in California… 12 triathletes from Miami, very afraid of the cold! Our coach Vanessa Soulavy has told us all about this race, that she had tried to do it since around 10 years! that it used to be called VINEMAN (with a slightly different course) and how it would sell out so fast that she could never get a chance to sing up! it would literally be sold after 2-3 minutes!

finally, after the race changed dates (and name) to Santa Rosa, it would be a bit misleading and she would finally get a chance to sign up! so she went ahead and not only signed up, but convinced several of 101 Training to do so… and Pum, we are headed to California! after 6 months after signing up and started our training for 70.3! it was the first half Ironman distance for many of us… and what was more exciting than doing it with a team, a coach, family and and after race party in the Napa vineyards!

As race approaches our coach has a BIG news for us… she is pregnant! hahaha but coach… we all thought this was your most wanted race ever!! well it was, but she’ll have to sit this one out! she is still going guys… don’t panic!

As race day approaches we get more nervous, start buying jackets, wind breakers, gloves, head bands and such… It’s cold, it will be cold at 6 am and we are not used to that! being more prepared for the cold gives us confidence…and so race day approaches we can’t believe the beauty that surrounds us during the swim, wow! it only gets better during the bike…, cold starts fading away as we dismount to run and start seeing so many people cheering on us during the run! the coach with her big tummy! the ” couch” (how we call her husband), the rest of the family and friends, we are so close to finish line… adrenaline is at it’s highest peak!

we made it…! can’t believe it! we all made it! all finishing with huge smiles! time to head to the vineyards and celebrate!
